From the Ashes Has Been Published!

I am now officially a published author! From the Ashes went “live” on’s Kindle book store at a little before three a.m. this morning. I sat staring at the page for several seconds, clapping with glee. No, not at three a.m. If I’d still been up at that time of morning, I doubt I’d have had the energy or mental capacity to do anything with glee.

It has taken so long to get to this moment that it almost doesn’t seem real. In a way, I suppose you could say that I’ve been a published author since 1998, when . . .

My Adventures in Time‑Traveling Excerpt

Here is a little excerpt from the story.  Now keep in mind that this is from the first draft, so it might have typos and could undergo some changes.

If I had known that my entire life was going to change that day, I’d have worn a better tie.

Yes, I know that’s an odd way to start a story, but I’m an odd sort of guy, so there you have it.

The day started out like an average workday with nary a clue that it was going to turn out otherwise.  Not counting burnt toast, breakfast was uneventful.  Ditto . . .

A Little Fanfic History and More

Ah, fan fiction, fan fiction.  My first love . . . well, in regards to writing, that is.  So, what circumstances led to me become a fanfic writer?  It all started in 1998 when one of my favorite TV shows, F/X: The Series, was cancelled, leaving the fans dangling with some major unresolved issues.  In order to tie up loose ends, several people on the F/X official forum chose to write stories picking up where the series left off, and, one day, I decided to try my hand at it, too.  Up until then, the only fiction writing I had . . .

How “My Adventures in Time‑Traveling” Came to Be

Seven years ago, out of the blue, a sentence suddenly popped into my brain: “If I had known that my entire life was going to change that day, I’d have worn a better tie.”

Thus was born my time-traveling story that’s taken all these years to complete a first draft.  No, I’m not kidding you.  It actually started with the creation of that opening sentence.  Of course, then I had to come up with an actual story to go with it.

The foundation of the novel, what the whole thing’s built upon, is its leading man, Michael Greyson.  It was . . .

From the Ashes Excerpts

Here are a few excerpts from the story to give you a little taste. Enjoy! :-)

Unsure what to say next, Falon didn’t speak for a moment.  He was about to make a comment about the nice weather when Beth suddenly blurted out, “Would you like to go for a hike with me?”

Taken completely by surprise, he didn’t reply for a few seconds, which was apparently long enough for her to regret her outburst.  Her cheeks turned pink, and she exclaimed, “I’m sorry!  I didn’t really mean to say that.  It just popped right—”

Beth paused.  “Yes?”

“Yes, I’d . . .

How “From the Ashes” Came to Be

Though definitely not my first original fiction story idea, this one won the race to be the first one completed.  Once the idea took root in my mind, my muse grabbed hold of it and wouldn’t let go.

So how was this plot bunny born?  When I began reading Kindle eBooks, the first genre I went to was fantasy, it being my favorite.  From that genre, I segued into paranormal romance.  I soon found one in which the leading man had the ability to command the seas.  That one got me to thinking about stories in which the hero could . . .

At last!

Well, here I am, on the verge of actually having an original fiction novel published for sale.  This has been a dream of mine, on and off, for a great many years.  There were a lot of times when I wondered if it would ever happen.  When I became deeply immersed in the world of fan fiction, writing original fiction didn’t just get shoved onto the back burner, it was completely off the stove and tucked in a corner of the refrigerator.  Once in a while, I’d think about it, but I was just too interested in writing my fanfics . . .
